GMR Sunday of Fun - PCA Anniversary Party

Stillwater Farm

About this event

And August 10, please join fellow Green Mountain region members as we celebrate a Sunday of Fun with two events taking place in East Central Vermont.

The day will start with a driving tour organized by Fred Sperling that will begin at the Long Trail brewery in Bridgewater Corners Vermont and end at Green Mountain Region's celebration of PCA'S 70th Anniversary. The party will take place following the driving tour and will hosted by GMR President Alessandro and his wife Anne at their home, Stillwater Farm in West Windsor, Vermont from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Please note that access to their house includes .25 miles (1/4) on a very well maintained unpaved road.

If you've already registered for the driving tour, then there is no need for you to complete this registration process. However, if you plan to attend only the anniversary party, we ask that you complete this registration process.

A little background about PCA. By the mid-1950s there were already hundreds of Porsches in the U.S. and Canada including two cars in Vermont. Most, starting in 1951, were imported and sold by Max Hoffman in NYC, Brundage Motors in Jacksonville, John von Neumann in Southern California, some by “foreign car” dealers, and some brought home by U.S. servicemen. But – there were no service technicians, no parts, and very little accurate technical information.

The first “PCA” gathering could best be described as a gripe session held at Bill Sholar’s apartment in Virginia on February 8, 1955. The principal agenda items were focused on technical assistance.

Subsequently, the group sought a charter from the factory, placed ads in car magazines to attract members. The PCA was chartered by Porsche as on September 13, 1955 where there the first official meeting took place at Blackie’s House of Beef in Washington. There were 12 members in attendance.

By January 1956 PCA members totaled 190 located in 27 state, DC and Canada. The concept of a regional structure was always planned with the first group (Potomac, Central New York, San Diego, Chicago-Milwaukee and Rissentötor in Eastern Pennsylvania) chartered in 1957. The first issue of Panorama was published in December, 1955, R. Gamble Mann was the first editor. The size was chosen to fit into a 356 glovebox. That didn’t change until 2013.

And, as they say, the rest is history with a membership of over 100,000 in 2024 and a full range of activities at the local, regional and national levels
